Why, he asked himself, had he spent so much time over that painfully slow craft of wood-engraving if it had not been ‘to teach myself how to design scenes for the Drama’ and ‘how to delineate characters better’? It had given him an exceptional fund of patience (‘not a natural virtue in me’) and kept him from heartbreak over this long puzzled apprenticeship. Lying in bed at night, ‘watching the shadows in the walls and ceiling’, he saw how his dreams – those dreams that others had deplored as idle and immature – were part of his original vision for a new theatre. ‘I woke up’, he wrote, and recognised ‘what I could do to serve the British Theatre’.
